Monday’s Thoughts

I just spent the last couple of hours culling my photos. Culling, how photographers say they went back and deleted all the ones they didn’t like. It’s fascinating to go back and relive some of our days.

I first decided to (seriously) take up photography almost a year and a half ago to do a better job of documenting my kids’ childhood. I love to write, but there are many things that words can’t express. Many memories that translate better to a photo.

There’s this side effect, rarely mentioned, but when you flip back in photographs, remember the highlights, you realize how rich your life is.

Not just the big, beautiful moments,2014-01-13_0002

But the beauty…

And the hilarity…

Of the every day.

There are things you might not remember.

Like how your 7 year old wore a t-shirt when it was barely 50 degrees out. Likely because he wanted to show off his new Lego Star Wars shirt.

And how she dressed like it was Valentine’s Day. A cowgirl Valentine’s Day.

That’s really why I love it.

If you have been praying for my friend’s daughter, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor last week. She had surgery today, and this is the update that my friend shared tonight: “99% removed. Slow-growing. Initial basic pathology tells us it’s a benign tumor. She’s back in her room & we’re just waiting for her be ready enough for us to see her. Woop! Woop!”

Thank you for praying for her.

Happy Birthday, Claire!

Yesterday was the kids’ cousin’s first birthday. She is on the only cousin on Aaron’s side of the family.

Today, we went to her birthday party.

She is adorable.

It’s cute to see Lena play with someone smaller than her. When we got home, Lena said that she likes Claire because she is like Lena. “What do you mean?”, I asked. “We… both have hair.”

We tried to get a picture of the 4 of them together. Gus was ready for a nap at this point.

Reed thought watching her dig into the cake was hilarious.2014-01-11_0004

I declined her offer to share the blue frosting.

After the cake clean-up, she snuggled into her daddy’s shoulder. So cute.

When we got home, we were surprised to see a package from my sister at the door– belated Christmas gifts.

Lena had been feeling really bummed that her birthday and Christmas had past, so she was particularly excited about this surprise.

Legos, a train for Gus and a Llama llama book. Spot on.

Gusto

Reed got some delayed birthday excitement today.

My dad likes to tease and prank us. He’s also a bit of a health nut and always trying new foods and asking everyone around him if they’d like to try it. When we were there over the summer, Reed tried coconut manna and instantly gagged into the trash can. So, for Reed’s birthday, my dad took an empty coconut manna jar and stuffed it full of Clif Bars, something that Reed actually likes.

In true cousin sweetness, my niece insisted that Lena would really like this Strawberry Shortcake DVD that she found at a thrift store and made my mom buy it and send it to her.

And his other delayed birthday excitement, our babysitter sent him a birthday card with an Amazon gift card inside. He was so excited to pick something out. And it arrived today!

And, the littlest man. He got a postcard from my mom with a doggie on it, but was really just happy to eat a Clif Bar and get back to sitting in the toy shopping cart.

I have decided to start calling him Gusto, because that’s how he approaches life.

And lastly, a video of Gusto. Just try not to smile when you watch it.

Thursday

This post is going to be a bit unbalanced. Which kind of suits my day.

First, I have two prayer requests for you:

  • A friend’s 9 year old daughter was just diagnosed with a brain tumor the size of a kiwi. She will have surgery to have it removed next week.
  • My uncle, still very ill.

Both of these things are so heavy and sometimes I find it hard to be a parent AND process the hard things. I might feel sad, but as a mother of young children, sometimes I feel like there is no room for that. Someone always needs me. Life is always so busy.

We also got to spend some time with a friend tonight. You might remember him– he came home from Ethiopia shortly before Gus came home.

These two don’t see each other often, but they pick up right where the left off.

The way he is reaching up to hold Lena’s hand… so sweet.

Little Mama in Action

I am pretty worn out, so this will be quick. We had a long day. Well, I had a long night first. Gus wouldn’t go to sleep, then my dogs kept barking. It’s very rare that they start into a fit of barking in the middle of the night, and it happened twice last night!

While the kids went up to their beds tonight, I finished up the last of some dishes. By the time I got upstairs, this is what I saw:

Asleep already.

Me: Who tucked him in?
Reed: Lena.

That girl loves her brother.

Reed also really wanted me to take his photo and he posed in this lovely straight-up-the-nose shot.
