I love fall!

Today was a beautiful fall day.

We started our day off at the International Forest of Friendship in Atchison, KS. It has trees from all over the world, donated by each American state and many countries.

Everyone hugged a tree. Reed picked his based on color, Lena picked hers because it is the Scarlet Oak. Aaron picked his for his favorite state, Colorado. I picked mine for my home state, Pennsylvania. And we picked Gus’s because it was tiny like him! Because I have space for an extra photo, Lena was really excited that there was a tree from California there– apparently she’s been learning about California at school.

Colorado: Blue Spruce, Pennsylvania: Eastern Hemlock, New York: Sugar Maple? , Washington D.C.: Scarlet Oak, New Mexico: Pinyon, California: Redwood.

As you can see here, some of the trees seem to thrive in Kansas weather. And others… do not. Like my sad Eastern Hemlock and the Redwood.

There were no trees from Ukraine, but there was a tree from Siberia, a Russian territory although not the one Gus is from (obviously). A sad looking Sourwood.

Then, we found one of the most beautiful trees in the park, Rhode Island’s Red Maple. I said, “This tree is practically begging to be laid under.” Covered in beautiful red leaves, with a layer on the ground as well.

And, a leaf fight ensued.

Since Atchison is the birthplace of Amelia Earhart…

We also drove by her childhood home.

Then, we left Atchison and headed to Weston Bend State Park, in Missouri.

Lewis and Clark passed through here.

And, we went on a brief, beautiful fall hike.

The earthy smell of leaves, the crunch under our feet, and all the beautiful colors. Perfect.

He is becoming such a big boy. I think he walked the whole time himself.

Gus is practicing his full sentences right now and getting pretty polite with them. “I want …, please”. We all laughed when he announced today “I want to have fun, please!” Okay, buddy, we’re on it.

Trains and Hot Air Balloons

Our day started off with more playing with the train set.

I started working, in addition to my own business, several months ago. I work from home, which is pretty fabulous, but it also means my wardrobe is pretty sparse. I have a work conference this coming week, so I had to go to a bigger city to go shopping for a few items. On my way home, as the sun was setting, I saw this hot air balloon take off!

There were actually 2 hot air balloons. How fun, right?

Personal Creations (and KidKraft Train Set)!

A few weeks ago, a representative from Personal Creations emailed me and asked if they could send our family a gift of my choosing. Thank you to the Personal Creations team member who suggested us!

We gladly accepted! I picked the KidKraft Ride Around Town Train Set & Table. I thought it would be a good toy that my kids could share and play with together.

She told me it would take a few weeks for personalization and shipping, but just over two weeks and the mailman carried it into my living room today. Yay! That seems very fast for customization and shipping!

I had a half hour before the kids were home with the babysitter, so I decided to see how quickly I could put it together.
IMG_4230

Ambitious! It’s not a hard thing to put together, particularly the actual table. I assembled the table in around an hour and that was with several interruptions. However, the actual train track and other pieces took me a bit longer and I was glad to Aaron’s help figuring it out when he got home.

Then, we called the kids downstairs to take a look. I had kept it a secret until that point.

There was much excitement and everyone dug right in and started playing!

They played for over an hour, until it was dinner time. It is like an entire town– a mountain, a hospital, an airport, a lake, a farm, a crane. So much to explore!

And the personalization is fabulous.

Thanks, Personal Creations!

They can’t wait to get up and play with it again tomorrow.

ETA: Because the train table is near selling out, please check out some other great wood toys from Personal Creations.

Capturing October: Dressed Up

Happy Halloween!

This isn’t my favorite holiday. I’m just not a fan of spending a ton of money on costumes for just one day and I don’t have a lot of time to invest in making them right now. I asked the kids what they wanted to be and Reed said “Batman”. He hasn’t expressed any interest in Batman before, so I asked what superhero was his favorite, and if maybe he wanted to go as Spiderman again. Bingo! Easy enough. And Lena wanted to be “Spider girl”, a costume she got for Christmas last year. And, I bought a cheap hoodie off of ebay so Gus could be a cow.

IMG_4192

Before we went to get Reed and Lena at school, Gus was super grumpy and I told Aaron we might have to change his costume to Mad Cow Disease.

IMG_4166

Then, after the school parade was done, Lena came over to Gus and said, “you a cow!”
IMG_4173

And he happily giggled and played along after that.

He adores his sister.

Vampire teeth.

More Vampire teeth.

I love this one. I just love the look on Gus’s face.

Today is the last day of my photo challenge! Yes! Congrats to my friend Jennifer, who instagrammed her photos. And thank you to those of you who played along as you could.

I have decided to turn it in to a 365, a photo every day for a year, since I already have more than 1/12th done. However, I won’t be making prompts. Instead I will come up with a general list of about 5 things I want to capture each month and a few goals or things that I want to capture throughout the year. My goals is to shoot as much as I can with my DSLR, but I am going to allow myself to use my phone as needed, like I did this month when I was sick.

This list is a great starting place.

My goals for the year are:

  • Practice composition, particularly in candid shots
  • Focus on getting images right SOOC (straight out of camera)

My November Must-Capture List is:

  • More beautiful fall leaves
  • Thanksgiving
  • Autumn weather

Capturing October: Natural Light

I ended up picking the rainiest day of October for this one! Ooops!

I was still determined to get a bit more creative after yesterday’s BORING photo.

Isn’t the water wild on that last one?

We had a brief break in the rain after school got out, so we headed to the playground for a bit.

I really wish I had gotten the sleeves of her shirt in this photo. They were matching red and white polka dots. And the sides of the sunglasses are blue.

The park we went to is right next to where Aaron and I had our super laid back rehearsal dinner.
