I have a niece, who we call Violet. Last week, my mom put up pictures of Scarlett and Reed in her house, and Violet comes over and looks at them. Then, she asks my sister what their names are. When my sister told Violet that we were planning to name Erika Scarlett, she told my sister that she does not like that name! So, my sister told Violet that if she wanted to call Scarlett Red, that would be fine, but then Scarlett could call her Purple!

Now, Scarlett and Reed are Reed and Red.

Violet seems excited about her new cousin and playmate. This weekend, I took a short trip out to Pennsylvania for a family reunion. Before I left, I made up a stack of cards with Reed and Scarlett’s photos, and our contact information. Violet took one from me on the first night and carried it around with her. At the reunion, she took another photo and carried it around with her. A couple of times, I caught her staring at the photo.

“I was not staring at their photo!”

My sister told me that Violet also thought that Red would be coming with me on this trip and she was disappointed when she realized that she would not be. She asked my sister what kind of dress she would wear when she came to visit.

I’m glad to have family who is excited about Reed and Scarlett!

The Name Game

I thought I’d blog about something fun, after all of the other stuff I’ve blogged about lately.

As you may or may not know, Erika and Ilya are not their real, legal names. They’re names made up by Andrea at Reece’s Rainbow to list them on her website. We, Reece’s Rainbow included, legally cannot share their legal names publicly. But, we do know them.

We also decide that we were going to give them different names. Our plan for naming them is to chose a different first name, one that we love and agree on, for each of them, and make their legal first name their middle name. That gives them the option, if they’d ever want to, to go by their first first name. Our social worker agreed that this is a great way to give them a name special to us and keep their heritage.

The problem is… boys names. We picked out the name that we’ll give Erika without much trouble. It was one of my favorites and Aaron loved it. But Ilya’s name is so much harder for us. Our requirements are: the name is not completely obscure (like in the top 500 names), we both like it and it doesn’t sound stupid with our last name. We have a name that we agreed on, but there is another name that I LOVE and it has meaning. Aaron only thinks it’s okay.

Some of my favorite boy names which have been eliminated: Oscar, Asher, Jude, Peter, Oliver (I love names that end in an -er sound but they generally don’t sound great with our last name.)

So, does anyone want to suggest some boy names?

I have been so busy, with all of the things I have to do– things for the home study, just got all of our dossier documents, etc. In the midst of all of this craziness, I got an email from Bethany at Positively Orphaned, who confirmed how sweet Ilya is AND sent me more photos of him.
