30 Days of Thankful: Day 12

Today, I’m thankful for our walks. I love going for these walks– with the kids or without them. It is always a good time to play with them and for all of us to burn off some energy. If I’m alone, it’s a great way to clear my head.

Today, we played Superheroes and villans. Reed was Super Batman– since he was deciding who everyone was, he kept changing what he was to be the best superhero. Lena was rain girl, she could rain on us. Gus was Cry man– he could fly wherever he wants, get lost and then cry and cry and cry. First, I was fast girl, I was faster than any other women– ha! Then, I was goo girl– I could throw goo on all the other women. I told Reed I wanted to be nice, and could I please be cookie girl? I’d throw cookies at all the other people. But in a nice, loving way, not to hurt them.

A deer ran out about 25 feet in front of us– we’ve seen a lot of deer this fall. I think this is the 9th time I’ve seen them.

At the end of our walk, Gus was in the baby carrier on my back. Reed had his arm wrapped around my leg, leaning up against my side (yes, it is hard to walk like that!) and I had my arm around Reed, Lena was leaning into Reed and we were holding hands. Just cuddling and walking.

A year ago, we had no idea Gus would be a part of our family. Actually, we hadn’t even met Alyona yet. Here is a photo taken on November 18, 2011. Right before we went to Pennsylvania for Thanksgiving, and then from there, we went to Russia for the first time.

I love all these memories and I’m thankful we have the opportunity– the health, the open space, the time, to go for these walks.

30 Days of Thankful: Day 9

Today, I’m thankful for Reed.

Reed is a loving and affectionate big brother. He loves Gus and Lena and they love him. He is always looking out for them and trying to help them.

Reed is smart and funny. He has his school conference last week, and his teacher and I were talking about how we’re confident he’ll someday be at least bilingual, if he choses. He is inquisitive and always asking to learn new things.

Reed is just awesome and I’m thankful to be his mom.

Our Colorado Weekend

Reed had a 3 day weekend, so Aaron took a day off and we snuck off for a quick trip to Colorado.

We spent Friday in Denver.

We went to Dinosaur Ridge, where you can see some fossilized footprints.

Saturday, our friends took us to their favorite places. We didn’t really “know” these friends before this trip. Our family’s adoption stories are woven together and we have a mutual friend. After countless emails over the last year, it was great to finally get to know them in person.

The kids had so much fun together. The oldest 2 are just a few weeks apart and they really seemed to enjoy each other’s company.

Yesterday, we headed up to Pikes Peak before we went home. You can drive all the way to the top on a slightly intimidating road.

It was the perfect day. Even at the summit, it was in the high 30s. It turned out to be a bit of an adventure. Someone in our family did NOT enjoy the high altitude or the temperature.

Embrace the Camera: 10/11/12 and flashbacks

It’s Thursday, which is normally Embrace the Camera day, over at Emily’s blog. Each Thursday she hosts a little link party, and the point is to take a photo with your child or your spouse or a photo of your spouse and your child. Even if you don’t feel beautiful. That one day, your child will be so grateful for all of the photos with you.

Case in point:

How adorable are we? And my polka dots on polka dots. And my mom’s very high waisted pants. Fashionistas.

This picture always makes me laugh. My dad’s face is awesome.

We all went for a walk together on Sunday. I brought my camera along in hope of snapping some good photos.

I wanted a cute photo of Aaron and Gus. Both Reed and Lena wanted to be in it, too. This is a prime example of trying to take a photo with kids!

And my version of it…

But, here are the ones I actually like…

Gus ripped out my earrings 3 times on this walk!

When we got home, while I was making dinner, I found this scene…

Sitting down to read a book together. The boy who rarely stops moving slowed down enough to read through “Diggers and Dumpers” a few times with his papa.
