Growing Moustaches

Ilya and Lena just keep growing and changing. It seems like their personalities keep on changing, which I suppose is just a sign of them getting more comfortable.

Ilya is still picking up English like crazy. He was just telling Aaron about the time we made pasta and cookies together. His latest thing to ask is “are you sure?”

Lena is still not speaking tons of English which we understand. She has words, but even sometimes if I give her choices, I just don’t understand her. I use signs or gestures to help out with this, but it can be very frustrating. She does not seem to understand that I cannot understand her. She does have a few words which are very clear.

I have decided that grocery shopping with kids can be fun… for the first few months, it was kind of tiring. Lena sits in the cart and Ilya walks, unless there is a cart which both of them will fit in and is easy too push. I’d have to have one eye on Ilya at all times and both of them just loved to babble and sing out in public. Now,  Ilya will recognize enough food that I can tell him what we need and he’ll help me look for it.

Food is still an interesting dilemma in our house at times. Lena has become, overall, a good eater. She enjoy healthy foods and will gladly munch on a salad and picks her beans out of a meal first. But, there are times when she is just sooo slow, like the other day licking up every bite of salsa, sour cream and guacamole, before eating her quesadilla. Ilya, surprisingly, is not the greatest eater. When he was first home, he’d try EVERYTHING and woof it down. Now, not so much. He might like something one day and not the next. There are a couple of safe foods, which he’ll always eat, like pasta or tacos, but it can go either way with most other things.

I am also pretty careful about what my kids eat. They hardly ever have sweet things beyond fruit. But, tonight, I made them these chocolate avocado shakes. This was very exciting for them. Aaron and I agreed that they were good… not the best milkshakes ever, but definitely yummy. They don’t taste like avocado at all; I actually thought they were a bit too chocolatey!

This look reminds me a bit of his cousin Bram.

I love this photo. It’s hard to get a great photo of him smiling… this is just so Ilya!

I love this photo, minus the food on her tooth.

I wasn’t sure I’d get a moustache picture with her, because she kept doing this. Hey, Becky? Recognize this shirt? It’s adorable.

Salvador Dali, anyone?

Food mustaches are quite popular in our house. Here is a sour cream one from quesadilla night.

The Post That I Actually Write

I have gotten quite terrible at updating. Honestly, good weather, and I’m busy. I am busy with my Etsy store and my new obsession with the Wii Fit… oh and the two little kids.

I had been thinking that I needed to have an Ilya date sometime. He and I hardly ever spent time alone together and we could just use the bonding time. I was meaning to run this past Aaron. Well, then today, Ilya told Aaron that he did not want to go to the playground, he wanted to stay home and look at books. This is the time when I usually make dinner, but I made some time to read a couple of books with him. I think it’s good for us to have alone time. Especially doing a low-key activity like that. He is still really excelling with learning new things. Today I started to teach him how to write his name.

This is Lena learning how to bat her eyelashes.

Aaron was out of town the other night and I had bathtime and bedtime all to myself. The kids take really long bathes, so we just sit in there on the computer or reading. I was just surfing the web and found this song… it is a new favorite…

And they could not stop singing it…

It’s pretty amazing how much they have grown and how healthy they look since they’ve been home. I notice Lena’s hair today. This is from the orphanage…

This is from a few days ago…

See how long it’s geting and how much healthier it looks?

I’ll try to get better at blogging for you all, but honestly, it’s a bit hard when the sun is shining or my Mii is calling to do another 30 minutes of yoga…

About Lena

I think I blogged a bit more detailed about Ilya, because he is more of a roller coaster ride of both highs and lows. Troubles and dramatic progress. Lena on the other hand, changes a bit slower and it is harder for me to notice.

But, there were a few things yesterday that showed me just how much she is changing, growing and settling in with us. First, I got an email from a friend. I was about something which I had been planning to ask for help with, and boom, before I even asked, this friend was offering exactly what I was hoping for. I hope to share more of that with you when things progress. Anyways, along with this wonderful thing she was sharing, she also sent me this photo…
ELENA

Honestly, the more I look at that photo and think about it, the more I want to cry.

It just reminds me of all of those photos we saw of her, before we knew her. Like this…

Even in one where she is smiling, in our blog header, my aunt commented that she just didn’t seem as happy as Ilya did… that she looked a bit sad underneath that smile.

Who is Lena now?

She is joyful.

Full of life.

And personality.

Another thing which reminded me of how smart and silly she is was when we were skype-ing with my mom and nephews today. My computer was about to run out of juice, so I asked her to sing to them until I came back. And she did, just smiling and singing about wanting an apple. Then, I asked her to sing about Puppytown and then the ABCs. Yes, she sang them all. Putting on a good show for her Babushka Lola’s birthday. Did she get beyond a couple lines of each song? “Mooo”, as she’d tell you, but she understood what I asked her and she sang.

My sister emailed me a few months ago, when we were having trouble with Lena screaming and throwing tantrums. My sister knew how totally miserable it was for everyone and her insight was simply that Lena was alive and fighting. That she was one tough little girl and that would serve her well in life.

Looking back, I can see how true that is. But, now, she is alive, strong and joyful. She is happy and silly. She laughs and will make others laugh to no end. Given the choice to walk or be carried, she usually says “ca weh”. Watch out if you tickle her or play with her hair, she will quickly return the favor. She is just a goofball. Smart, funny, happy and ALIVE.

Happy Birthday, Babushka Lola!

Today is Babushka Lola’s (my mom) birthday. Happy Birthday, Babushka, Lola! We love you lots and lots. We made her a special card and it took us about two hundred photos to get what I wanted. Here are some of the outtakes:

It was cheesy smile central.

Well, I think I prefer the smile to the grumpy look!

“Smile like this!”

Apparently his most natural smiles come about when he chokes his sister!

This was one of the last photos on our first attempt. “Ppppppphhh, I am so done with Mr. Cheesy Smiles over here.”

She is a little princess. If you are wondering what happened to her head, that’s what happens when clumsy 3yos run on pavement.

After looking through the photos from our first attempt, we tried again. Lena had a very cute pose in one of the photos, which inspired this idea…

I’m over here, Lena!

This is so cute, but not what I was going for.

And this was her birthday card. How cute are these two?!?

March Madness

I’m sorry I haven’t been blogging much. We have been enjoying our awesome weather. I was so excited when we hit 50 a few weeks ago, and now we’ve had a few days where we’ve reached 80. So we’ve been getting out, a lot.

We’re still having lots of ups and downs. Ilya is just a strong-willed kid. While I think being strong-willed is an awesome attribute in a person, it is very frustrating to be a parent of a strong-willed child. Yesterday, Lena and I were looking at a book and Ilya was sitting next to us. I was asking Lena the colors and we looked at the color of a car. She told me it was “yellow” and I said “yes, that’s yellow.” And then Ilya said “I dink es orange.”

We also had a fun evening last week. We were at dinner and Ilya was bossing Aaron around. I asked Ilya if he was the papa and he said “yes!” So, we made him do papa’s jobs for a little while. He was very persistent with the whole thing, not wanting to give up. But, he would ask me for help and I told him that papa does not need help with those things. I told him if he was Ilya, he could have help. He never gave up, but I made him stop after awhile and reminded him that Papa is much bigger than him and maybe he shouldn’t try to be Papa until he’s that big. I know that he wants to be LIKE Papa, but we’re trying to teach him that he’s not ready to have all of the privileges and responsibilities that come with being a grown up.

Lena had a big owie last week, running on the driveway. She cried until we started cleaning her up. I got her a “special drink” (yogurt) and took her over to our rocking chair. She sat with me, until Aaron and Ilya decided to go play some more and she was off. That girl is tough.

Here’s a little March Madness message for you…
