The Minis

Alternatively titled, I have way too much time on my hands.

My friend B asked in my last post: “Am I the only one that thinks your children are mini versions of you and your husband? Reed is all your husband and Lena is all you! So meant to be!”

Ha, no. You are actually the one millionth person to comment that!

When we were praying about which child to adopt last year, one sweet little boy caught my eye– he reminded me a ton of my husband.

Do you see it?

When I was visiting my family in Pennsylvania over the summer, I went through a ton of photos from when I was about the ages that my kids are now and some of them reminded me of…

(Apparently we both make lots of silly faces!)

Because I don’t want to leave her out– Lena and I are probably the most similar personality wise, although she’s more even-tempered than me. When I was her age, I liked to play by myself– making up stories, which is something I often find her doing. Lena’s birthday is coming up on Saturday and we got her my favorite childhood toy. I can’t wait to give it to her, although I’m trying to figure out when I can sneak off to play with it myself. Anyone want to guess what she’s getting?

Memories

I find it hard to believe that 2 years ago we were in Ukraine. Hard to believe that it’s only been 2 years since Reed and Lena became part of our family. It seems like a lifetime ago.

I miss our time in Ukraine– we had so much fun there. While our first few months of parenting were very difficult, the journey to become parents was a lot of fun. So many great memories there. Nothing like the nervous, excited energy of meeting your children for the first time and finding your way in an unfamiliar culture with a language barrier!

And 1 year ago, we were in Russia. That seems impossible, too.

I think about this sweet girl every day and wonder where she is and what kind of life she is living. It’s hard not to know, to have any clue. Unfortunately, she is still on the Russian database for orphans, which is not promising. 😦 But, I pray that she has a good life, beyond what I can imagine. She was a part of our incredible story which brought us to our amazing Gus, and I hope that her story is just as incredible, even if I don’t know how it ends.

30 Days of Thankful: Day 28 & Day 29

Day 28: I’m thankful for the quiet moments. This on the couch moment actually happened. Blues Clues was on and Gus was interested enough that he sat down to watch it with them while I made dinner. Only for about 10 minutes, but that was 10 minutes I had to myself!

Our quiet time was also supported by a great package we got from my mom yesterday. It was filled with lots of great stuff, including a bunch of VHS tapes my mom picked up at a church bazaar. Yes, we still have a VCR and used VHS tapes are way cheaper than Blu Ray!

(I totally dug through it BEFORE I took this photo– my mom packs it way neater than that.)

Day 29: Today, I’m thankful for our big fenced in yard. The kids (and dogs) spend SO much time out there playing.

30 Days of Thankful: Days 22-27

We spent Thanksgiving at Aaron’s parents house. I left my computer at home, and while I planned to just blog when we got home, I got a little further behind than I planned.

Day 22: Today, I’m thankful for books. I love reading– for the entertainment and to learn new things. It’s a fun way to get  a perspective of something that I wouldn’t otherwise understand. My two favorites that I’ve read recently are the Handmaid’s Tale and Kitchen House.

Day 23: I’m thankful for my warm, comfy bed. I was definitely missing it on Friday!

Day 24: 2 years ago today, we met Reed and Lena for the first time. Today, I’m thankful for Reece’s Rainbow, the organization which helped us find our children. And I’m thankful for Sasha, our facilitator in Ukraine, who held our hands for the Ukrainian side of things.

Day 25: Today, I’m thankful for the internet. I use it for connecting with family and friends who live far away, for shopping, for my business, etc. I don’t know if we would have adopted, or at least not at this point in our lives, without the help of internet research. It is so helpful for so much.

Day 26: I’m thankful for medical care and insurance. One of the kids had to take a trip to the doctor today for an ear infection. It was very quick, easy and inexpensive to get what we needed and I’m thankful for that!

Day 27: Today, I’m thankful for warm winter clothes. We definitely needed them this morning with a temperature of 10 degrees Fahrenheit when I took Reed to school!

30 Days of Thankful: Day 16

Today, I’m thankful for my camera. It’s not an essential by any means– it’s a big luxury. But, I love using it. Dumping all of the photos off of my camera at the end of the day is something that I always look forward to. It can help me erase the yucky parts of my day and help fill them with the things I want to remember.

Someday, Gus will stop giving me this smiley stink-eye at mealtimes. And believe me, I want to remember it. It’s a warning for what’s to come.

Here are some photos from our ordinary day, but I had so much fun looking at them. None of them were anything like I wanted when I took them, but they were so funny all strung together.
